Properties of formic acid and acetic acid

Description

Formic acid and acetic acid are the simplest carboxylic acids and have been known since the Middle Ages. Acetic acid is widely used as a spice, while formic acid was first used as a preservative. Today, however, formic acid is used more in the chemical industry. In this experiment, students learn about the two acids by having them react with magnesium. They realise that they can infer the strength of the acids from the strength of the reaction.
